Overview
A driveway is a load-bearing structure that happens to look decorative. A car park's worth of weight turns and brakes on the same square metre every day, and everything that happens to a poorly built driveway, ruts, dips, spreading edges, standing water, happens because the base beneath it was never built for that. Surefoot approaches driveways as groundworks with a finish on top.
Excavation and spoil removal, sub-base construction to a vehicle-rated depth, surface water drainage and soakaways, kerb and edge restraint, dropped kerb liaison where required, laying in block paving, clay pavers, resin bound, gravel or concrete, plus the brick piers and boundary walling that frame the entrance.
Homeowners replacing a cracked concrete or worn tarmac drive, households adding off-street parking, and anyone whose driveway floods, ruts or sends water toward the house or the pavement.
When the existing surface ruts, cracks or holds water; when the edges have spread and the surface is migrating into the borders; when parking needs to be created or widened; and when a new build or extension changes the levels at the front of the property.
Driveways carry point loads from wheels, particularly under turning and braking. Base depth, compaction in layers, edge restraint and drainage all have to be right, and surface water must be dealt with on your property or through a permeable build-up rather than discharged across a public footpath.
What it costs to get wrong
Driveway failures are progressive. They start as a dip that collects water and finish as a full excavation and rebuild.
A shallow, poorly compacted sub-base cannot spread wheel loads. The surface deflects, water sits in the dip, the base softens further, and the failure accelerates every wet month.
Without proper kerb or haunched edge restraint, block paving migrates sideways. Joints open, the pattern loses line, and blocks begin to lift under turning tyres.
Impermeable surfaces without drainage push water toward the house or onto the highway. That means standing water at your door, saturated ground next to your foundations, and potentially a drainage requirement you have not satisfied.
Laying new surfacing directly over a failed one, skipping the membrane over soft subgrade, compacting one deep layer instead of several, and no allowance for the fact that a delivery van will eventually use the drive too.

In detail
Surface choice affects cost, drainage requirements and maintenance. Here is how the options differ in practice.
Concrete blocks in a range of formats and clay pavers for a more traditional finish. Laid on a compacted base and laying course, in herringbone or stretcher pattern, herringbone interlocks best under turning loads, with cut blocks at edges and kiln-dried sand or a stabilising jointing compound.
Resin bound gravel gives a smooth, permeable surface laid over a suitable rigid base; resin bonded scatters aggregate onto a resin layer for a rougher, impermeable finish. Both depend entirely on the base beneath them, which is why we specify and build that base rather than inherit it.
Gravel over membrane with a proper edge and, where the fall demands it, a stabilising grid to stop migration. Reinforced concrete where a hard-wearing monolithic surface suits the property, laid to falls with movement joints.
Excavation to formation, geotextile membrane on weak subgrade, MOT Type 1 compacted in layers to a depth suited to the loading, channel drainage across the entrance, gullies and soakaways sized to the area, or a permeable construction where infiltration is the right answer.
Concrete or block kerbs, haunched edge courses, brick piers with capping, gate posts set into concrete, and the setting out of the entrance so vehicles can actually swing in without clipping a pier.
Domestic driveways are designed around cars and the occasional delivery vehicle. Yards, car parks and access routes for commercial premises need a deeper build-up and heavier edge detailing.
