Overview
A firepit is the cheapest way to extend how many months a garden is usable, and the easiest thing to build badly. Heat cycling destroys the wrong materials, water sitting in an undrained pit freezes and splits the structure, and inadequate clearance turns a nice evening into a hazard. What it costs to get wrong

Standard bricks and ordinary mortar in direct contact with fire will spall and crumble. What starts as flaking becomes a structure with loose masonry around an open fire.
No drainage means the pit holds rainwater. It freezes, expands and splits the base, and it is unusable for weeks at a time because you cannot light a fire in a puddle.
Firepits set too close to fencing, a garden building, decking or overhanging branches, or surrounded by combustible surfacing, are a genuine fire risk and a hazard for children and pets.
Building the pit on paving instead of a base, using facing brick as a liner, no ash removal access, and positioning the pit where prevailing wind blows smoke straight into the house or the neighbour's garden.

In detail
Firepits vary more than they look. Fuel type, position and surround materials all change the build.
Wood-burning pits with an ash pan and airflow provision; gas firepits and fire tables with a supply route, burner tray and media, connected by appropriately qualified trades. Fuel type dictates depth, ventilation and drainage detailing.
Refractory or fire-rated lining materials in direct fire contact, dense block carcassing, facing brick or natural stone externally, and stone, brick-on-edge or concrete copings that resist heat and shed water.
Circular and square sunken pits, raised bowl and table forms, built-in benches or a full circle of seating walls, and combinations with an outdoor kitchen or pizza oven in one scheme.
Non-combustible hearth zone in stone, porcelain or block, clearance from boundaries, buildings and planting, and levels set so the surround drains away from seating.
A drained base or soakaway beneath the pit, ash removal access, and a specification that can be brushed out and hosed down rather than dismantled to clean.
Domestic firepits are sized for a household and occasional guests. Pub gardens, holiday lets and hospitality spaces need larger, more robust structures with more generous clearances and surfaces that handle constant use.
