Overview
Most disappointing gardens are not badly designed; they are badly joined. A patio laid by one firm, walls by another and levels by a third produces a space where nothing quite lines up and nobody is responsible for the parts in between. Surefoot builds gardens the way we build extensions: one team from the excavation to the last coping, across Doncaster and South Yorkshire.

A garden is a drainage and retaining problem before it is a design problem. Levels, water management, footings for walls and structures, and the sequencing of trades are what decide whether the finished space works, and those are groundworks and masonry decisions.
What it costs to get wrong
Landscaping is where the most money is wasted on a house, because the failures are structural but the pricing is often treated as cosmetic.
Where levels and drainage are not addressed first, water collects at the lowest point, often against the house. The lawn turns to mud for half the year and the new patio is unusable for the same period.
Terracing walls built without adequate footings or drainage behind them bulge and fail. When they go, they take the terrace, the paving and often the planting with them.
A paving firm that will not touch the walling, a fencer who works to a different level, a groundworker long gone by the time the discrepancy shows. You end up coordinating it, and paying for the overlaps.
Buying a design without checking what it costs to build, laying paving before drainage, ignoring how the garden will be used in February as well as July, and installing features like firepits or outdoor kitchens as afterthoughts with no base, no services and no fire separation.

A full transformation is several trades stacked in the right order. These are the elements that make up most of our landscaping projects.
Reduced dig and regrading, retaining structures to create usable terraces, land drainage where the ground holds water, soakaways sized to the areas they serve, and channel drainage across paved surfaces.
Natural stone and porcelain patios, block and clay paving for paths and driveways, steps and level changes, brick and stone edging, and permeable build-ups where infiltration is the correct solution.
Retaining walls, boundary and feature walling, raised beds and planters, seating walls, piers and gate posts, and brick or block bases for garden buildings, all founded on proper footings.
Outdoor kitchens with masonry carcassing and worktops, firepits and fire tables, sunken trampolines excavated, drained and edged flush, plus conduit runs for lighting, power and water laid before surfacing.
Topsoil, turfing and seeded areas, planting beds prepared and edged, and membrane and decorative aggregate zones where low maintenance matters more than lawn.
Most of our landscaping is domestic. For commercial premises, developers and communal areas we work to programme with the accreditation set main contractors require, and design for higher traffic and lower maintenance.
