Overview
A sunken trampoline is a groundworks job with a trampoline in it. The pit has to be excavated to the right depth, retained so the sides do not collapse, drained so it does not become a pond, and ventilated so the mat performs. Done properly it is safer and far tidier than a freestanding frame; done as a hole in the lawn it fills with water within a month.
Excavation and spoil removal, retaining structure to the pit walls, drainage and soakaway, airflow provision, frame installation and levelling, flush edging and surround, and reinstatement of the surrounding lawn or paving.
Families who want the trampoline used rather than tolerated: no towering safety net dominating the garden, no frame to mow around, and a much shorter fall height for younger children.
While landscaping or groundworks are already under way and machinery is on site, or when a freestanding trampoline has killed a patch of lawn, blown over in a gale or become the dominant object in the garden.
The failure modes are all below ground. Unretained pit walls slump and jam the frame, no drainage means standing water and a mat that never dries, and no airflow means the trampoline is dead underfoot and the pit smells. Retaining, drainage and levels are exactly what a groundworks contractor does.
What it costs to get wrong
The difference between a sunken trampoline that lasts and a hole full of water is entirely in the parts you cannot see once it is finished.
Without drainage and a soakaway, the pit collects every bit of rain that falls in it and everything running off the surrounding lawn. The frame corrodes, the mat stays wet and the pit is unusable for months.
Unretained earth walls slump, especially in clay after wet weather. The pit narrows, the frame binds, and the ground around the edge becomes an ankle-turning trip hazard.
Trapped air under a mat in a sealed pit ruins the rebound and stresses the frame. Poor airflow also traps damp, which shortens the life of every component in the hole.
Digging a pit to match the trampoline exactly with no working space, no edge detail so the lawn crumbles into the gap, and no thought given to how the frame will ever be removed for maintenance.
Our process
We start from the trampoline model and size, because the pit is built around the frame, its diameter, depth and mounting arrangement.
Ground conditions, water table, existing drainage, access for machinery and the position that suits how the garden is used.
Priced on the real dig, spoil removal, retaining method, drainage and finished edging, with the scope written down clearly.
Excavation with working space, retaining structure to the pit walls, drainage and soakaway installed, airflow provision, frame set level, then edged flush and the surround reinstated.
We check level, edge and drainage with you, and back the work with a 2-year workmanship guarantee, with a 10-year warranty available on request.
What you get
Set into the ground, the jumping surface sits at or near lawn level, which is a meaningful safety difference for younger children.
No towering frame and net dominating the view, and nothing to mow around or strim under.
A proper drainage and soakaway arrangement means the pit stays usable through a South Yorkshire winter.
Retaining structure to the pit walls, so the ground does not slump into the gap or trap the frame.
The perimeter is detailed so the lawn or paving meets the trampoline cleanly, with no crumbling edge or trip lip.
2-year workmanship guarantee, 10-year warranty available on request, £2m public liability and £10m employers' liability.
In detail
The pit does the work. These are the elements that determine whether it performs for years or fails in the first wet season.
Machine excavation where access allows, hand trimming to the frame line, and spoil removed or reused elsewhere in the landscaping scheme where it is suitable as fill.
Blockwork or brick retaining walls to the pit perimeter, or a purpose-designed retaining wall kit where the trampoline manufacturer supplies one, founded so the sides carry the surrounding ground rather than relying on the soil holding its shape.
A drainage layer and outlet or soakaway beneath the pit sized to the ground conditions, plus airflow provision so the mat performs correctly and the pit does not hold damp.
Frame set dead level and fixed as the manufacturer requires, with the surrounding edge finished flush in turf, paving or a soft surface so there is no gap and no lip at the perimeter.
Reinstated lawn, paved or safety-surfaced surrounds, retaining or seating walls where the trampoline sits in a terraced garden, and integration with the wider landscaping scheme rather than a hole in the middle of it.
Clay holds water, made ground is unpredictable, and a high water table changes the drainage solution entirely. All three are common locally, which is why the site visit determines the method rather than a standard detail.
£2,000,000 public liability and £10,000,000 employers' liability cover, with a 2-year workmanship guarantee on every project and a 10-year warranty available on request.
